Office Party Etiquette: 7 Things to Avoid

After decades of helping businesses celebrate major milestones, product launches and holidays we’ve learned a lot about corporate casino parties. We’ve also seen employees make a number of serious missteps once they let their hair down. It’s easy to forget you’re at a company event when you’re having so much fun.

Failing to follow office party etiquette could end up affecting your career. Avoid the situations below and you can have fun while still holding your head high in the office.

Avoid Overindulgence

The #1 rule for office parties is to limit how much alcohol you drink. Even when the beer and wine is flowing you have to know your limits and stick to them. Getting drunk at the office party could result in a termination on the spot. Play it safe by having no more than one drink per hour or abstaining from alcohol all together.

Avoid Drinking and Driving

The only thing worse than having one too many adult beverages is getting behind the wheel of a vehicle after drinking excessively. This is not only dangerous, it can also put your employer in a very precarious situation. If you plan to drink always have a sober ride home. Employers can help circumvent the problem by hiring a transportation service or arranging to cover the cost of cabs.

Avoid Flirtatious Behavior

This one is often connected to overindulgence, but with or without libations flirtatious behavior is never a good idea. Some companies actually have strict policies that discourage office romances.

Avoid Sensitive Topics of Conversation

Topics you wouldn’t normally discuss with co-workers in the office should also be avoided during a corporate party. These include religion, politics, personal finances, sex and office gossip. You may be chatting and slipping into social mode during the party, but you still need to be seen as professional the following Monday. Stick to positive, upbeat topics like goals you have for the next quarter or a vacation you’re planning.

Avoid Inappropriate Attire

Just because the office party is after hours that doesn’t mean club clothes are acceptable. The safe bet is a business casual outfit that’s a bit swankier than daytime attire. Avoid clothing that’s tight, revealing or offensive in any way.

Avoid Being a Loner

A corporate party is the time to relax and mingle with co-workers. For some people it’s also one of the few occasions that they’ll have to socialize with supervisors. Bring yourself a wingman or wingwoman and get to know everyone outside of the office. You’ll look like a team player and may just make a few new friends. Also, make it a rule to keep your phone in your pocket or purse, not glued to your hand all night.

Avoid Devouring the Buffet

There’s a lot of social etiquette surrounding food. When there’s a buffet at the office party there are a few things to keep in mind. On the first go round don’t overstuff your plate. There’s nothing worse than seeing some people throwing food out because they couldn’t finish it all while others who were last in line barely get a bite. The other buffet cardinal rule is to never go back for seconds until everyone has had a chance to get a plate.
